Behind The Song | "citybound"

"Exit Fo[u]r" Track No. 2

I wrote this song shortly after a trip I made to visit my alma mater.

A student that I had been in choir with a few years prior had come up to me after a presentation I did for the class... he asked to speak privately.

It seemed a bit interesting to me, considering we were never close.

That's when he told me his story.

He was a pianist, passionate about his craft, and he felt strongly about pursuing music as a career. His parents, on the other hand had their various reasons in opposition to this dream, and respectfully so. Pursuing a career in the arts is no walk in the park.

It was in that moment that I realized how incredibly blessed I was to have parents that so fully supported me in the path I chose for my life.

They were not always crazy about my aspirations, but they never once tried to dissuade me from them. Instead, they pushed me to make those dreams come true - to work incredibly hard, to have unshakable faith, and to not let anyone but myself determine the path for my life.

It hasn’t been easy, in any aspect of the word, but the burden has been lighter than for others, and it's all because of my ma and pa.

citybound is about following your dreams despite the adversity and tribulations that you will face along the way.

It's a story about taking that exit that's just for you.

LYRICS

There was this time I dreamed that I didn't make it through the night

Abruptly waken wide, I wanted to cry that whole bus ride

Stared out my window, time passed so slow, until my stop was roadside

One foot on the ground, no turning back now

One light in the window, nobody's home

I lost sight of my shadow a year ago

Little birdie persuading me, "fly away and never come down"

Tempting now, but I'll stick with the Greyhound

Citybound

Each month went day by day, afraid of the ever-present change

Up in my room and on the roof, I spent most of my days

Caught in between a rusty old dream and a shiny new routine

But being safe and sound's not what it's about, you see

One light in the window, nobody's home

I lost sight of my shadow a year ago

Little birdie persuading me, "fly away and never come down"

Tempting now, but I'll stick with the Greyhound

Citybound

Ma and Pa, I'm citybound
