Behind The Song | "all talk"

"Exit Fo[u]r" Track No. 3

My experiences at college and beyond have definitely molded my relationship with this song.

I wrote it the summer before my senior year of high school and have carried it close to me since then. It’s all about my observations of our human nature. Delving into the taboos, the hypocrisies, and the truths that we hold not only within ourselves, but as a society.

Over the years, some of the lyrical content has been edited to further exemplify my thoughts on the subject; The main idea, however, remains the same.

Coming to conclusions on a lot of these ideas, alongside a continual observation is a constant a wake up call to me. A learning tool to prove that we need to listen to one another - to truly grasp the differences between us.

Perhaps, even more importantly is identifying the similarities that bound us together.

We're addicted to the satisfaction of believing we are being heard, being understood. Many times however, as a society, we take it so far as to create a sense of negation against those we don't agree with or those that we feel don't understand us.

The silliest part is that the majority of the time, we all want the same thing. So what's causing the friction? Perspective.

This song is the embodiment of the idea that it can be worthwhile to stop talking and just... listen.

LYRICS

There are things that everyone says, but no one knows

Like, how one moment I can love you, the next day I can fold

How the time speeds up while we grow slow and old

Well, there are things that everyone says, but the comprehension's out of our control, yeah

There are things that nobody says, but we all know

Like, how you shouldn't ever need to make excuses for the ones you truly love

How feelings can't be explained, or put to words

There are things that nobody says, but we all know even though they're never heard

And the people, we all talk

It's in our code, written on our bones

But there's a game that we're taught

From when we're young, bite your tongue

Unless you're singing the same song as everyone

There are things that everyone says, but we all forget

Like, how you can't please everybody, someone's gonna be upset every damn time

What doesn't kill you gets you farther, rub some dirt on it, you'll be fine

There are things that everyone says, and we're hypocrites for falling in line

And the people, we keep talking

It's in our code, written on our bones

But there's a game that we're taught

From when we're young, bite your tongue

Unless you're singing the same song as everyone

There are things that are neglected to be said

But it's impossible to fool the entirety of the population

Because words that aren't read are words, everyone keeps thinking

Words that we keep thinking aren't the same person to person

But everybody knows the words unsaid are the ones that ring most true
