Behind The Song | "dead for today"

"Exit Fo[u]r" Track No. 5

A few summers ago, I was babysitting this little girl. We were riding bikes one afternoon and eventually decided to head in for a nice cold cup of lemonade.

Upon entering the house, she ran over to the living room and plopped herself down on the couch yelling out “i’m dead for today...

but just today!”

That got me thinking.

As hard as we try to stay positive, driven, and fearless, there have been, and are always going to be, days that we're simply just not - and that’s okay... as long as we don’t let those moments define us.

People are going to tell you that your shiners are scars when in reality they’re just bruises. They will heal if you take care of them.

People are going to tell you they don’t want you to go, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want you to stay either.

Pay them no mind and follow your own path.

We all get one life on this earth. It’s not all going to be sunshine and smiles, but you get out of it what you put into it. There are going to be things along the way that scare us and put us down for the count.

In the end, I guess what I’m trying to say is that tomorrow’s a brand new day if you’re feeling dead for today.

LYRICS

I'm dead for today, because I'm afraid

The lighting will chase the thunder and I'll have no escape

I'm dead for today, but only today

I'm coming from six feet under, pushing the daisies up on my way

'Cause they don't want you to know that a shiner's a bruise and it fades

So, I'm only dead for today

I'm dead for today, but only today

And I'm finally resting peacefully right where I lay

'Cause they don't want you to go, but they sure as hell don't want you to stay

So, I'm only dead for today

I'm dead for today
